Through a collaborative partnership between the School District 21 Education Association (DEA) and the School District 21 administration, staff members in School District 21 have been able to participate in a Technology Self-Insurance Program in recent years. This program is designed to offset the cost of accidental damage to a District-owned technological device that has been assigned to an individual employee (i.e., a laptop or a tablet). Through this program, we can continue our commitment to ensuring that our community’s resources and tax dollars are used wisely and that we, as staff members, are committed to protecting those resources.
Most issues with devices breaking in CCSD21 have historically been the cause of either a hardware malfunction–i.e., something simply stops working. Occasionally, instances occur when a computer is accidentally damaged in the classroom or school setting in the normal course of working with students and in a school. In either of the above examples, the repairs are completed by the District outside of the Self-Insurance Program and the employee is not responsible.
Participation in the Self-Insurance Program is optional. Participation costs $25 per school year and is deducted evenly across the remaining paychecks during the year–amounting to a bit more than $1 per paycheck.
When it has been determined that a computer is broken, and while accidental, it is the responsibility of the staff member, if he/she is a member of the Self-Insurance Program, there will only be a $50 deductible. (The average spill on a staff laptop costs approximately $400 to repair!) If he/she is not a member of the Self-Insurance Program, the staff member will be responsible for the full cost of the repair.
Beginning with the 2013-2014 school year, rather than utilize a paper form, staff members can sign-up using this online form. (You will need to be logged in with your CCSD21 Google Apps account to sign-up.) Sign-up for the Self-Insurance Program is open to all staff members who are issued a portable CCSD21 device (i.e., laptop, tablet, etc.) through the beginning of October each year.
(If you would like a copy of the form for your own records, prior to submitting, please check the checkbox at the bottom of the form as seen below, and email with a copy of the form will be sent to you.)

Each District 21 school is named after an American author, and learning and literacy is at the center of our Professional Learning Community. The Modern Pen provides a collaborative location in which District 21 teachers can come together to learn the skills that will enable their students to learn new skills and to understand concepts at an even different level than before.
